The Problem

Smallholder farmers are at the center of the growing economies of many African countries, but food insecurity persists. In order to increase farm households’ incomes as well as food security across the continent, AGRA, an African-led alliance focused on transforming the agriculture sector, has launched a large number of programs and initiatives aimed at improving agricultural products and supporting local farmers.

IDinsight entered a partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) to improve farmer practices across Africa. Within this partnership, BMGF financed an advisory engagement of IDinsight with AGRA. AGRA needed to adapt its Monitoring and Evaluation Strategy for the next five years.

IDinsight Service

IDinsight assisted AGRA in adapting its Monitoring and Evaluation Strategy by developing its theory of change (mapping interventions to outcomes), surfacing underlying assumptions, and identifying relevant indicators. IDinsight reviewed all documentation on the new strategy shared by AGRA and met individually with nine thematic teams to discuss their plans going forward.

The result of this engagement was an updated Monitoring and Evaluation Framework for AGRA. They integrated it into the strategy they submitted to their funders.
