Statement from IDinsight regarding “Improving measles vaccine uptake rates in Nigeria: An RCT evaluating the impact of incentive sizes and reminder calls on vaccine uptake”

30 June 2020

As an organization committed to the highest standards in the conduct of our research, IDinsight takes seriously any lapse in adherence to ethical procedures. We have identified potential issues in the case of the study of a pilot program, “Improving measles vaccine uptake rates in Nigeria: An RCT evaluating the impact of incentive sizes and reminder calls on vaccine uptake,” recently published in PLoS ONE. Although we believe the findings of the research to be sound, and we are confident there was no malintent on the part of the researchers, we have received questions about the details and timing of the study as described in our application to the National Health Research Ethics Committee (NHREC) in Nigeria. We are engaging in this inquiry with complete seriousness and working closely with NHREC to clarify the issues. Out of an abundance of caution and respect for process, we have asked PLoS ONE to retract the article while we engage in further discussions. We will provide an updated public statement after these discussions have resolved.
